With nearly 35 years of engineering experience behind me, I found myself redundant for the first time and quickly discovered how unforgiving the job market can be for anyone over 50. I set up my own consultancy, applied for countless roles and networked relentlessly – but progress was slow. A friend suggested I explore the Portfolio Executive community. With nothing to lose, I joined a few sessions with Charles and realised that this approach might allow me to bring my full experience, personality and capability to the table in a way traditional employment no longer could. It felt like an opportunity worth pursuing.
I began by working through the structured process: extending my CV, reflecting deeply on my career, and identifying the niche where I could genuinely add value. With Charles’ guidance, I started to see that my experience wasn’t just a history – it was a product that organisations would pay for. With a fair amount of trepidation, I approached an acquaintance at the gym who invited me to visit their factory. Within minutes, I could see clear opportunities for alignment, efficiency and improvement.
The company offered me a short slot to present my offer. I drew on my corporate experience and translated it directly into their context. I proposed an initial review and roadmap, which I hope will lead to ongoing support and a longer-term relationship.
I’ve learned that I am valuable – and that my experience genuinely helps others. Stepping out with confidence matters. Everything we’ve learned throughout our careers can be repurposed and applied in new ways. The key is trusting yourself enough to take the first step.
The Portfolio Executive model allows me to contribute meaningfully to a business while working at mutually agreed times. I’m accountable to myself and to my clients, and the flexibility enables me to support multiple organisations without compromising quality. It’s a way of working that plays to my strengths and respects my experience.
I’m looking to build a strong, diverse client base that grows my reputation and confidence. I want to share my knowledge widely, contribute positively to society, and be rewarded fairly for the value I bring. Ultimately, I hope for a sustained portfolio of clients that brings interest, challenge and enjoyment.
