With more than 30 years of executive operational experience, I knew I had something valuable to contribute to growing organisations. I’ve founded several businesses, I’m a Techstars graduate through Sun Exchange, and I’ve worked extensively across South Africa with both corporates and SMEs in a wide range of industries. Becoming a Portfolio Executive allows me to bring that breadth of experience to multiple businesses while working across European time zones and supporting clients with high-quality expertise at a cost-effective rate.
My portfolio journey began after exiting Sun Exchange, when I was looking for a new challenge. I updated my LinkedIn profile, described myself as a Fractional COO, and the work started coming in. It was a simple step, but it confirmed there was real demand for experienced operational leadership on a flexible basis.
One of my first successes was becoming the Fractional COO for an AI services company in South Africa, helping them shift their focus from working in the business to working on it. Together, we built the operational platform needed to improve delivery, create consistency and prepare the business to scale.
Along the way, I’ve learned that fractional operations is one of the hardest executive disciplines because the role is both strategic and highly tactical. When you’re not in the business every day, you need systems, visibility and trust to stay ahead of what’s happening. I’ve also discovered that I’m a strong mentor. Having founded four businesses and spent decades in operational leadership, I’ve seen most of the challenges founders face, from scaling teams to navigating difficult decisions, and occasionally even acting as a “marriage counsellor” to founders. More recently, I’ve learned just how transformative AI will be, and how many organisations need practical guidance to turn the excitement into meaningful business value.
It’s working for me now because I genuinely enjoy the variety. One week I might be supporting a technical AI business, the next a clothing manufacturer, with a mix of long-term operational partnerships and shorter strategic interventions. That combination keeps the work engaging while allowing me to make a meaningful impact across very different sectors.
Looking ahead, I’m keen to broaden the geographic reach of my portfolio beyond South Africa, working with more international businesses that need experienced operational leadership, practical execution and the confidence to scale.
