Meeting Charles was what first drew me to becoming a Portfolio Executive. We had a very easy conversation that immediately made me feel comfortable with the community. I was particularly attracted by its international breadth, the opportunity to learn from others and the chance to contribute and help where I can.
My fractional journey began six years ago when I reached a point where I couldn’t follow the direction of a new CEO at the company I was working for. I decided it was the right time to venture out on my own, initially working as a consultant before naturally developing into a Fractional COO.
My first real success was securing a contract with a tech association to become an Executive Advisor to its members. That relationship proved particularly valuable, resulting in many of my early contracts and helping me establish myself in the fractional world.
Along the way, I’ve learned that being fractional means telling people what you do, because you never know who they know. Business development can be both easy and hard. Referrals have worked particularly well for me, while building relationships from cold outreach has been much more challenging. I’ve also learned the importance of building credibility and a personal brand through content, podcast appearances and, more recently, becoming an author.
It’s working for me now because that focus on visibility and credibility is beginning to create momentum. Content creation has developed naturally through podcast appearances, while the upcoming release of my book is opening doors more frequently. I’m also continuing to build relationships that are creating more opportunities for speaking engagements.
Looking ahead, I want to develop more one-to-many engagements that allow me to broaden my reach and increase the number of people and businesses I can help.
