After more than 25 years in global leadership roles, I became convinced that some of the best leadership capability in the economy is locked inside large organisations — while many mid-sized businesses, where it could have the greatest impact, are left without access to it.
Mid-sized businesses are expected to scale, professionalise, attract investment and compete with larger players — often without the leadership infrastructure that larger organisations take for granted.
The Portfolio Executive model allows me to work across several leadership teams, bringing senior judgment, operating discipline and strategic finance capability to businesses that need those strengths without necessarily building them permanently in-house.
My portfolio journey began when the owner of August Leadership asked me to join the business as it was expanding globally. He said, “Come and work for six months; stay if you like; otherwise, we’re still friends.” Six years later, I’m still there — which tells you something about where I add value: not as a consultant passing through, but as a long-term thinking partner who helps the business grow into its own ambition.
August Leadership became the assignment where my portfolio model fully took shape. It showed me what effective fractional leadership really requires: being close enough to understand the business properly, independent enough to see the issues clearly, and experienced enough to help leadership teams translate ambition into action.
Through these experiences, I have learned that most business problems are not solved by more analysis. They are solved by better framing, clearer choices and the courage to act.
The discipline is knowing the difference between one-way door and two-way door decisions. Irreversible choices require deliberation. Reversible ones require movement, learning and adjustment. In growing businesses, treating every decision as irreversible is often how momentum is lost.
The work also demands humility, judgment and emotional intelligence: knowing when to challenge, when to listen, when to give advice, and when to help others reach the right answer themselves.
This model works because I am not arriving with theory. I bring a tested playbook shaped by multinational discipline, private equity pace, family-business pragmatism and hands-on execution.
I help owners and boards see what the business has become, what it now needs, and what must change before ambition turns into complexity. My work is about turning that clarity into better decisions, stronger execution and more resilient growth.
The next stage is to work with more businesses facing the kind of growth, complexity and transition where this experience can make the greatest difference — whether as a fractional executive, adviser to the board or non-executive director. The title matters less than the ability to create meaningful impact.
I operate best at the point where board-level perspective meets practical influence. Sometimes that means doing the work directly. Sometimes it means helping an effective leadership team see the business more clearly, make better choices and execute with greater discipline.
